SCPedia works in a similar way to a forum or blog. Users can login and post a comment or write an entry via a web browser. There is a difference though and it's because SCPedia owes it roots to the humble wiki.

A wiki has one huge difference from a forum or a blog and that is in regards to document ownership. An article in a wiki may be the cumulative work of hundreds of people, where a Blog entry or forum post is usually the creation of a single person. In practice, SCPedia is actually a combination of the two. There are some sections (the reviews for example) that can be considered to be articles from a single author, while others (in Software, Do It Yourself, General Tips etc...) may have many contributors.

There three main types of users in SCPedia:

  1. Author - An author can create articles but they are reviewed by someone else before they are published.
  2. Editor - An editor can create articles (but they are reviewed first, same as Author) and also edit any published article (with immediate effect).
  3. Publisher - A publisher can write and publish new articles or edit any published article.

In practice only user types 1 and 3 are used, with authors being people who are new to SCPedia and publishers those who have been around a while and we trust not post silly or defamatory content.

Use this link to login to SCPedia or use the Login link in the SCPedia menu.

How to submit an article

Once you have your login name and password, use the Login link to get access. A third menu module will then appear on the left side of the screen titled "User Menu". Follow the "Submit an article to SCPedia" link and compose or paste your article into the Editor that appears on the web page.

Then, on the same web page, below the Editor in the Publishing section, select a Section and Category for your article to go in. These are the areas of SCPedia that organise the articles so they are easy to find.

If you forget choose a section and/or category, the default is Uncategorized and your article will be published in that group. Unfortunately, this means your article will not end up anywhere in particular so you won't be able to see it. If this happens, one of the admins will fix it for you, just post a message in the SCPedia forum to let us know something needs to be done.

Last of all you click the save button at the top right hand side of the Editor and you're finished! Authors will then receive a message saying that the article will be reviewed, or if you are a Publisher the article will be posted on the site immediately.

How to edit an existing article

Login to SCPedia and browse or search for the article you wish to edit. When the article is displayed look for the edit icon in the top right-hand corner and click it to edit the article.

The normal article editor will appear with the current article contained in it's editor window. Remember to click save when finished editing.
